Personal background
I am 40 years old and live in London, England.
I have always thought that ET is going to be friendly. Look at humanity as an example: although there is likely to be war in the Gulf soon (personal opinion) mankind has, over the last 4000 years improved from 'savage' to 'well-armed savage! (**Giggle**)'. BUT (to be serious), in that time we have also learned to talk through our differences (such as at the UN and EU councils) and to resolve some differences through negotiation, though sadly not yet all can be so acheived.
If WE can, so too can other intelligent beings. ET is likely to be (potentially) hundreds of years in advance of our technology. By association, that also infers that their civilisation is likewise, going to be more advanced.
In which case the chance of aggression is massively lessened. I hope so anyway.
Despite the tragic loss of the Columbia recently, I believe firmly in manned space flight. It is very likely that mankind will colonise Mars. In order to do this we need to know how to live/work in space, and on the surface of a planet with non-breatheable atmosphere.
I am also of the opinion that the moon should be colonised only by commercial interests, and under strict international rules. The reason being that living on the moon is not (IHMO) going to advance our knowledge base by much. Thus, it should become a 'vacation' park.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
ET exists because we do!
It is arrogant of mankind to assume that just because the serendipity of life occured here, it cannot do so else where.
We should transmit a beacon. I do not know if this is workeable, but here is my idea:
Perhaps a boosted signal at the frequency of hydrogen molecules, much higher than the natural 'noise' of hydrogen. Pulsed in the order of; 1 pulse, 1 second gap, 10 pulses, 10 seconds gap, 100 pulses, 100 seconds gap (each pulse to be 1 second in duration), repeated. The idea being that the frequency is that of the number 1 element in the periodical table. I assume ET will have the same table (irrespective of what they call hydrogen, it will still be in the same place on their table). This being boosted in strength will show an intelligence behind it. Especially with a repeating pattern (unnatural - intelligence again shown).
The pattern is to give base ten counting. It would be reasonable for ET to work out that base ten is used and, by looking at their own hands, make the assumption that mankind has ten digits with which to count.
