Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think there is life in the universe other than ourselves. Just look at earth. From the point where life could have existed, it did. Humans are only a fraction of the life that has existed here. So the question shouldn't be if, it should be where. SETI has a good jump on that. Obviously for us to discover another society they would have to be at least at our level technologically. However, I would warn against coming in contact with beings less advanced than ourselves, at least at the present time. We as a society are still young and undeveloped. When we all learn to live without crime, poverty, and hate, then we would be worthy of such an event. Otherwise we run the risk of infecting other civilizations with the errors of the human race. As the majority of the people of this world suffer, we do not yet have the capability of helping other worlds when we ourselves do not posses the intelligence to keep our own society thriving.
If other advanced peoples out there know about us, no doubt they keep to themselves. While the thought of transmitting a beacon would make our existence known, if we are so far behind them, will they even care? To make contact with a pre-interplanetary race, no good could come from it. But I still think we should try. No one knows what they actually will think.
