Profile: Mike Coleman

Personal background
I am a 59 year old retired communications engineer with a new, rather powerful, computer and an ADSL connection. I reasoned that SETI&Home would be a good way to put that power to work.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I see no reason for life not to exist elsewhere in the universe, even our own galaxy, which appears to be the practical limit for the SETI search. How we will discover it I don't know. I think that interstellar travel is impractical for us, and probably very expensive even in the next milinium. I think, therefore, that signals in the electromagnetic spectrum makes the most sense. The problem with that spectrum is the distance/time factor, the further away an object, the earlier in cycle of intelligent development, hence the practical limit for the SETI search.

I run SETI@home to allow my computer to do some useful work even when I am away. I also like the concept parallel processing to address complex problems and I like the thought that I am part of that effort
