We'll probably discover it with a project like seti@home (seti@home is the frontrunner in my opinion)

Tough to quantify any benefit. Discovery is a very high probability. Significant benefits would require 2-way communication which would require a technilogical breakthrough, not on my radar screen.
Beacon... definitely yes. Consisting of a marker series of prime numbers, then lots of data about who, where, what we are.
I run it because I want to do my part, however small.
