Profile: Alex Holden

Personal background
Born in Blackburn, Lancashire, England on New Years' Day 1976, I've always been interested in computers in general.
My job dosen't really reflect my interest in computers, as I work in a safety critical role on public transport and is very much hands on.
I currently live in Salford, Lancashire, England - next door to the Commonwealth games this year, which I am very much looking forward to.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it would be extremely stupid to say that extraterrestrial life does not exist. Given the effectively infinate size and infinate number of celestial bodies out there, only the most arrogant would say that this single little planet is the only one capable of sustaining life.

The SETI and SETI@home projects are probably our most effective way of searching for intelligent life beyond what we call home.

The timescale for discovering extraterrestial life is probably far beyond my own lifetime. This project is one of faith. A discovery could happen at any time. The question has to be: Are we prepared?
I would like to think that when given scientific proof, we as humans are capable of accepting that we are not alone in the universe. I just hope that if we do discover something, that something is not too many light years away.
Do I think that we should transmit a beacon? Yes. What is the point in listening if we are not prepared to transmit? Should we hide our candle under a bushel?
I believe that SETI@home is a good cause for spare processor cycles. Distributed computing, using spare computer time has to be a good thing. There's a heck of a lot of computers out there effectively twiddling their thumbs waiting for their users to do something - so the utilisation of that spare computer time to search for extraterrestrial life, or to fold proteins, or to model weather patterns and so on is probably the closest thing Man will get to gaining something for nothing. After all, who turns off their computers? Not me.
