Profile: Bob Loar

Personal background
I live in Ohio, USA. My wife and I married in 1975, and we have 12 children - 8 boys and 4 girls. I am a full-time computer programmer, and also instruct Kempo karate part-time. My hobbies include astronomy, watercolor painting, writing, and I am an avid reader. I am a serious student of the martial arts, holding a 3rd degree brown belt in Chinese Kempo - soon to test for my black belt.

I have always been fascinated with the idea of extraterrestrial life. I grew up reading Heinlein, Asimov, Norton, Niven and Pournelle, etc. I have always felt that there must be other intelligent species out there somewhere.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1.) I certainly do believe that extraterrestrial life exists. I think that we will eventually pick up the signals of other civilizations. The benefits would be to know that we are not alone. If they could survive, so can we. The dangers, obviously, are the effect an advanced civilization would have on us. Also, there is the distinct possibility that they could be hostile.

2.) I think it would be an excellent idea for us to set up a beacon to transmit signals out into space. Obviously, Sagan and others had the right idea of using mathematics in the signal. It seems to me that any intelligent civilization would understand mathematics.

3.) I run SETI@home so that I can be a part of something bigger than myself. It is an opportunity to contribute in some way to the dream I've always nourished of finding intelligent life "out there". I think the project is a great idea.
