Profile: Laura

Personal background
I'll be 16 on September 3rd, and I'll be starting 10th grade soon. I live in a little town by the Mississippi River in Iowa.
I've always been interested in space, and the planets, etc. and at age 6 was thrilled to discover that there was actually an organization that was searching for ET life in space.
I'm currently saving up for a good-quality telescope (I'm so tired of using the binoculars), and am reading books on astrophysics in my spare time.
I'm a big computer nerd, and spend 5 hours online daily. I'm a big fan of Carl Sagan, and am reading Contact right now. Contact is also my favorite movie, and is what made me want to start seriously thinking about astronomy as a career.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? If so, when and how will humans discover it? What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?
ET life has to exist. It's very hard to believe that we are the only living creatures in the universe. I believe we'll eventually make contact with other lifeforms, it's just a matter of time. We'll either pull in radio signals, or they'll come to visit! ^.~
The possible benefits could be learning more about their cultures, and teaching them about our cultures, and finding comparisons. They could also guide us in making new technological advances. Some dangers...well---they could always be hostile...

2. Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send?
I believe we should definately transmit a beacon for others to find. There doesn't really need to be much to it, just kind of a "hello, anyone out there?" type signal.

3. Why do you run SETI@home? What are your views about the project? Any suggestions?
I run SETI@home because I'm extremely interested in space, astronomy, astrophysics, the search for ET life, etc. and this is just another way to get involved. My views are that SETI should get more funding, and congress made a mistake in taking its funding away back in the 80s. No suggestions.
