Personal background
I am 51 yrs. old and recently moved to Allen, Texas. I have a degree in Computer Information Systems from Tulane in New Orleans, where I grew up. I've spent most of my working career in the oil industry. My hobbies are cycling, computer games - especially MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games), reading, listening to a wide variety of music, and perhaps I'll get back into playing guitar or take up piano before long.

Astronomy was the first science to interest me as a child. I memorized a lot of information about the planets and nearby stars when I was about 10 or 11. I would certainly love to be alive when mankind sets out on its first trip to the stars, but since that probably won't happen in my lifetime at least I can help with SETI and every day brings new hope and the possibility of discovery.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As enormous as the universe is, I am inclined to believe that we are probably not alone. I believe that if humankind is to discover extraterrestrials within the next hundred years or so, it will most likely be accomplished using either the SETI program or something similar. The odds of discovery by any other means (from my limited knowledge) seem to be infinitesimal. It is very intriguing to consider the likelihood that somewhere out there in space there could be another “SETI” program in place. However, we must realize that only those within 50 or 60 light years distance (or however long we’ve been transmitting signals that could be detected) would have been able to discover us by now if they are using technology similar to our own.

Given the size of the universe and the fact that our nearest intelligent neighbor could be hundreds or thousands of light years distant, we have to accept the fact that it could indeed be hundreds or thousands of years before we discover extraterrestrials. We have to start someplace though, and I’m proud and honored to be a part of it. To the people behind SETI, I say THANK YOU!
