Personal background
I am a petroleum products pipeline operator from Southeast Texas. I’ve completed my 44th Earth-orbital year and have been a perpetual student of electronics and computer science since 1976 AD. Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe extraterrestrial life does exist. However, receiving a broadcast signal within the narrow band of which we are searching is a rare expectation, regardless of the sender’s intelligence. One-way communication is nonproductive... and embarrassing. By not transmitting a beacon ourselves, we are proving this by our own example. Perhaps like us, they too are only listening. If we do detect a signal, more than likely, it would pertain to danger or a call for help. The SETI-at-Home project should be expanded to analyze the data from ALL radio telescopes.
