Personal background
A retired Paramedic/Police Officer (hence the screen name), I've been with SETI since June of 1999. This is the first computer fast enough to do it justice, but I enjoy watching the signals get processed.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Sure. I also agree with the "Calvin And Hobbes" comic strip, in which Hobbes observes, "The surest sign there is intelligent life in the Universe, is that NONE of it has tried to contact us..."

Benefits? Limitless, as would be the dangers. What if we taste like chicken?

2. It's a little late to ask if we want to send a beacon. EVERY radio signal, TV signal, Atomic Bomb flash, etc., are screaming to the Universe that we are here. As a species, we're not exactly subtle....

3. I love running the SETI program because it fascinates me. I like being part of this program, I also love watching the signals ticking over. I'm impressed at the size of the program, and the number of users involved. I've told everyone I know about it.
