Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? I certainly don't deny that it does. But w/out verifiable proof, I guess we're left to simply ponder the possibilities & run really cool screen savers until the truth is known.
If we were to send a signal for others to find, said signal should contain an encrypted recording of Frank Sinatra singing New York, New York - that way the extraterrestrial civiliztion who finds the signal will know we're a cool planet & won't blow the crap out of us w/lasers.
I run the Seti@home program because when guests see it running they immediately ask me what it is & I tell them I'm monitoring U.S. sattelite intelligence data for the CIA. Then they get scared & leave.
No, honestly, I run the program just to do my part in the search for extraterrestrial life. As the poster says, "I Want To Believe."
