Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The God that I worship is a creative person and with a universe as big as it is, I find it hard to believe that there can't be life elsewhere. If there isn't any life out there, then it's an awful waste of space...aaI'm amazed when I hear people say that finding life on other planets will bring total social destruction as all the beliefs we have held dear (whether Christian, Judaism, Islam or something else) are smashed to pieces. To discover that there is extraterrestrial life wouldn't (in my opinion) be a threat to my faith.aaHumans have faced challenges since the beginning of history. Whether it's explaining aurorae, discovering new continents, belting the globe and finding our place in the universe, the Gospel has stood. I don't see any danger in finding life in space.aaI hope we do find signs of life. However, to be honest, if we do, there won't be a whole lot we can do about it because of how long it would take to hold a conversation. There could be generations between a question and its answer!aaIf you want inspiration to run SETI@Home, watch the movie Contact (or better still, read the book). It wonderfully illustrates the innate sense of loneliness the human race has, spinning around our star, wondering if there is anybody out there, hoping that there is a purpose..... hoping for...... well...... just hoping.aaOf course, I found the substance of my hope in Jesus Christ, but the universe is so big and awesome and the Bible says "it's the glory of God to conceal a matter and the glory of kings to seek out a matter".
