Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
ET exists, but the odds are against us ever meeting in person due to the distances involved. If our current science is found to be wrong and faster-than-light travel turns out to be a practical reality, then we may someday meet them.

If FTL travel is possible, we should stay as quiet as possible. Advancements in technology do not always bring advances in social behaviour. An advanced race may wish to exploit those that they discover and we would be powerless to prevent it.

I run SETI@Home just in case we find the needle in the haystack.

There are now several distributed projects, and SETI is currently the one I choose to give my spare cycles to because it is the one with the least selfish motivation. The only other that holds my interest is the Genome project. In my opinion, the anti-cancer project will only result in the pharmaceutical company fat-cat executives getting even richer than they already are. I have no desire to help them achieve their goals of personal wealth.
