Personal background
I was born (and still live) in Sisak, realtively small town in central Croatia. Although a light pollution is not very high, I'm still having trouble of exploring the sky as much as I would want to. Now seti@home gave me an opportunity to be involved in exploring universe, even if it is just a fragment of a true exploration. Currently I work as a radio (let's say it) DJ, on a local station. I am doing one man program almost all week, and I'm trying as much as I can to promote general science, ecology, astronomy etc. I also try, in my spare time, to be a writer. Succesfuly? We'll see.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Is there extraterrestrial life? With almost complete certainty I can say that there must be some sort of life beyond our reach. Put aside religion and those contemporary proffits who "have seen the light", common sense is telling us so. If Universe is filled with life, does it make less sacret, less magnificent? Is that our true fear of answering that primary question which brougth us all here. If life exists, why haven't we allready discovered it, and will we ever? Do we really know what we are looking for? Little green men? Angels? Some sort of inteligent crystals? Even if we disregard that Universe itself may be true living organism, how do we define life, inteligence, love? We may have all sorts of tests, even rules and laws that are trying to describe them. But what do we really know even of those things that are constantly surrounding us. In my humble opinion humans will discover all those things they are looking for, just right after they open their eyes and put away all "filters" in front of them. When we understand each other, we will understand Universe, because we are part of it and it is a part of us.
There is so much danger in discovering any kind of E.T. life. Such discovery will change every part of our life, and mostly spiritual part which is the most delicat of them all. Science is easy, we'll change few laws, use different formulas, we'll think of somenthing, don't worry. But when we sit in our home and face new answers, will discovering of other worlds crumble our own? Our faith, our religion, our spirituality.
Governments around the world can only hope that there isn't any kind of life up there, God forbid even sligtly inteligent than our. Believe me, governments would be shaken, who knows, even fall. What justification would they have for any of their actions if we are just a small part of huge Universe of life. But they will surely find their way out.
As much as I would want to continue on this topic, this is a limited space, let's just hope that universe isn't.
