Profile: X Man

Personal background
Hello there. My name is Marc and I have been participating in seti@home for about 4-5 years with one screen name or another. This is my latest screen name as I can not remember my previous ones.

I am 32 years old born in NJ, USA and raised in Toronto and Timmins, Ontario. I now live in Atlanta, USA. If you live in Atlanta and travel GA 400 and see a truck with a Canadian flag on the rear window and a license plate reading ONTRIO, you have seen the X-man.

I am employed by United Parcel Service in Atlanta, GA, United States as a Data Administrator and really enjoy my work. UPS overall is one of the best places to work. I never applied to the company, they sought me out - yeah me =)!! It has been a mutually beneficially arrangement for a number of years now. I am looking forward to my retirement from UPS at the same time my niece takes her place as a second generation UPSer. My niece even at six has a strong sense of math, science and financial stewardship. She is teaching her mother a thing or two about conservation.

I play hockey on a recreational team here in Atlanta called the Atlanta Lizard Kings. Last year I believe was their first season. Over their first season, they courted me to join, I could not for personal reasons. I finally got hockey fever again (once hockey gets into your blood you'll never really get it out). We started practices in preparation for our fall/winter season.

Other than that I am attending University (late starter), have two cats (Margaret Thatcher [Boots] and Winston Churchill [Winnie Pooh]), and my partner Kevin.

That is a bit about me.
Marc
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? Simply put, yes.

If so, when and how will humans discover it? It is my feeling that we really won't 'discover it.' I believe that when we finally attempt to destroy ourselves (WW III scenario) we will get their attention. They will come to render assistance. If for nothing more than a species that needs to be studied and kept under watch until it has matured.

I will preface the next statement by saying I am not religious. The Bible may have already fortold of our next encounter with extraterrestrials. There are many books in the Bible that suggest we have been in contact with 'Angels' in that past and that we will again in the future. It begs serious debate if you are to give any portion of the work any credibility.

What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

Benefit - those who come to our aid in the future could provide us with proof that we are not alone, hopefully changing the self-destructive course we as humans seem to reaffirm with each act of hatred and ingnorance every day. It is my hope it would happen well before we find ourselves on the brink of our own extinction, by our own hand.

Danger - Those who may come to us may determine, as an advanced species, that we are too dangerous and help us destroy ourselves; exterminate us like we have done to countless lower species on the planet and our own environment. It would be poetic justice to say the least. Give a few thousand years for the Earth to heal and see a more responsible species rise. Could you imagine the cockroach evolving as the most evolve species? Spppppoooookkkky. Pretty grim, eh? Just an antithesis to all the E.T. and Close Encounters, happy, happy, joy, joy stuff we hope for when the day arrives. I hope for the E.T. or Close Encounters version, personally.
