Personal background
Musician, composer and sound designer with a great interest in the sciences and science-fiction. Other interests include invertebrate zoology, marine biology, stochastic and algorithmically generative processes in sound and graphics, photography, and video games. When not ensconced in such pastimes I can be found at many parties, social events, political protests, and walking or (when it\\'s warm enough) skateboarding around my hometown of New York City.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Although I have no doubts that there are other (potentially) more advanced civilizations and sentient life-forms in the universe, I do have my doubts about how easily or when communication may be possible. It\\'s quite possible that another race of beings still find us to be too dangerous to engage contact with - and with good reasons. Nevertheless there is no way to close that gap except by trying whatever methods we may think up as they develop. If we don\\'t try it\\'s all but guaranteed that communication will never happen. SETI @ home is a simple, pain-free (and somewhat) cost-free way of contributing to that effort - and a brilliantly simple one at that.

Unlike many others I don\\'t feel that answers for our world and societal problems will or even should come from space or exploration of space. If we do not learn how to control our baser instincts, environmental disruption, greed, and lack of empathy we will be in a bad state no matter where we expand or colonize. I feel that we - as a species - have the answers we need to solve most of our problems... we just have to give our rational and empathic selves the opportunity to enact sensible and humane policies. I feel that (a) very few of our politicians have embraced those ideals and (b) fewer still truly consider the future of our species and home over the next few millennia and how our current decisions can effect our probable futures. I strongly feel that all politicians should read great works of science fiction to broaden their imaginative and planning abilities.
