Personal background
Hi all. I'm a 32 year old graphic designer/computer guru working in Oshawa, Ontario. As a lifelong sci-fi fan and Trekkie, I hold out hope that there is something better for the human race. I have a 3 year old son whom I hope will have a better planet to live with. There is no doubt in my mind that we are far from alone and I hope someone out there will take pity on our kind and help us figure out how to make Earth a better place.
Thanks for the opportunity to help out.
Will
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Extraterrestrial life must exist - it is ignorant to think that humans are the be-all and end-all of the universe. I don't believe humans will discover it as much as extraterrestrials will come to us.
2. Transmit a beacon? A little late, isn't it? With all of the existing broadcasts similar to what you are searching for already being sent, plus numerous probes - not to mention all the man-made junk floating around our planet - I would say we are transmitting something!
3. I'll help in any way I can. I believe the SETI project is an important undertaking that will eventually lead the non-believers, religious fanatics and other small-minded people to realize that the Earth is not alone and that humankind is certainly not the most important and intelligent species in the galaxy - but hopefully not part of the food chain! ;-)
But I also believe that we as a species are not yet prepared to meet beings more advanced than us. Our race needs to evolve before first contact should be pushed. However, proof of extraterrestrial life may help that process.
