Personal background
I'm from, and still live in, Huddersfield in West Yorkshire. That's about 190 miles north of London. I'm 51, 52 in two days time, am self employed and work from home. I'm a photographer/digital artist and am currently working on setting up my own web site to exhibit and, assuming a kneeling position with eyes raised to the heavens, hands together, sell my work. My wife, Judy, is a senior librarian at the local Public Library. We'll have been married three years in May. Both of us for the second time. Neither of us has ever had children.
We do, however, have seven cats that share our late Georgian house. Listening to music - Smashing Pumpkins, REM, Red Hot Chilli Peppers etc etc - is a vital part of every day, Billy Corgan is singing "1979" as I type. I like to paint and write, but not at the same time. Though I wouldn't call myself a film buff, I do love movies. The Internet, computers, cooking, reading, sleeping, waking up again, thinking what to type next, all play important parts in my life. Learning to fly is another. Can't afford the real thing so am working at Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002. Love it. Making contact with people from around the world is, to me, one of the great things about the Internet. I've had an interest in Astronomy and space travel since day one. This project has to be one of the best around and I'm very proud to be part of it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have no doubt that there is intelligent life elswhere. I even have the absurd notion it may exist somewhere on Earth. SETI has to be the main chance of discovering it. It could happen in the next five minutes or not for another 500 years. Just to actually discover proof of life elswhere would be a fantastic thing. The distances involved would surely prevent direct contact, so I can't imagine too much danger in the discovery. Let's face it. We have to consider what would be the dangers we pose to ET's as much as the dangers they may pose to us. We should do all we can to advertise our presence. The information we supply should be honest and consist of negative aspects of humanity balanced by the positive.
I've been a follower of the SETI programme since day one and am happy as well as proud, to be part of it via SETI@home. I would happily do more if I could.
