Profile: Richard Neimeyer

Personal background
My name is Richard Neimeyer of Albany NY. I am 53 years old and loving it.....I think!

I'm a lab assistant in the Electrical Engineering Technology Department at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY and have been since April 10, 1972.

My interests include surfing the web, computer hardware and software troubleshooting, golf, professional football (GO GIANTS!), pro baseball (GO YANKEES!), pro basketball (GO KNICKS!), reading sci-fi books, and watching TV.

I am married, have two adopted children from China as well as a grown daughter from a "previous relationship" who has two children making me a (gasp!) a grandfather, and just try to live for the day.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Although it seems to me that attempting to contact ET via radio is a shot in the dark (no pun intended) I have the opinion that if one doesn't give it a shot then we may miss an opportunity that could change the world forever. That's why I'm involved with this project even if it is in a very small way. I don't believe we need to have a beacon placed in orbit to announce our existence. We've been doing that anyhow since the advent of radio. Maybe a rotating laser beam could do the trick but it would have limited range in any event. Maybe a microwave beam would be better.
