Profile: Chanman

Personal background
I've always been fascinated by the night sky and often questioned whether there is life elsewhere. It is no surprise then that my background is physics and astronomy though that is not exactly what I do now. In the past I have worked with the astrophysics groups in Leeds UK, Deleware, Madison and Purdue looking for high energy gamma ray sources rather than extraterrestrial life. It was fun and I even got to spend 12 months at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station wintering over. I am now a scientific officer working in a government institute in Hong Kong and although I am now not working in my original field of work I have always kept my interests there.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
To me, it is not whether life is out there, I have always been convinced that there is and in abundance, but can we find extraterrestrial life that would or could return our phone call, collect I suppose, and strike up a translatable conversation with. The notion that extraterrestrial life is out there should give us the impetus to search rather the contrary and we should look more upon the advantages rather than the disadvantages of discovery.
