Personal background
I am a follower of science since my childhood. Although a chartered accountant by profession, I keenly follow whats happening in the world at large especially from natural science perspective.
My hobbies include reading books, browsing internet and a bit of travelling. I am interested in other cultures and try to explore common grounds which bond us as humanity.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I think it does. The more we get to know the universe(s), the greater are the possibilities that they really exist. Perhaps in forms alien to us. We are confronted with two probabilities, one is that there is life, whatever form, which is high, the other is, it is as intelligent as us if not superior, which is low. If the chemistry of that life form or civilization is the same as ours, which include similarity of chemical elements, then there is a high probability that they will be using the same medium for communication as us and that increases the chances of discovery. If we dont discover by projects like these we may discover by exploration of space. I think the benefit/danger question is a bit far fetched considering the fact that if we dont discover them, they will certainly discover us if they exist.

2. It is a difficult question. Perhaps we should just send a beacon which does not resemble pulses from galactic objects and should be distinct. With respect to content, it should be addressed only when there is some communication established. The irony is that although being fastest, light still takes quite a while given the dimensions of the universe itself.

3. I think it is great to be part of a woldwide community putting idle resources to a common cause. However I wish the project could be used for some other more immediate issues concerning us such as AIDS, deforestation, climate change, given such enormous computing power at our disposal.
