Personal background
I am 38 years old, married and live in Amersfoort, Utrecht in the Netherlands.
For my profession I am a Technical Consultant specialised in AIX, IBM system p, system x, IBM Bladecenters and storage (Disk, tape and TSM) for some years now.
In my spare time a play around a bit with electronics and computersystems which run some flavor of Unix or any other non-remond platform.
Some years ago I did some research about the my roots but this has come to a stop. Basically because my home is still a construction site. I hope that the main part will be ended before the end of this year.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
- I do think humans will discover extraterrestrial life and when they do it will probably in a drop of water. The discovery itself will be harmless it is what is done with the gathered information.
- Humans should transmit a beacon but I think it will only be found by humans again. It would be like finding the voyager again, which in some time we will find again. The beacon should be like a "time capsule" with information about our present time like they put into buildings every once and a while.
- I run SETI@home for some time now. I "think" I understand the big picture but what it is exactly about is a bit unclear. This is probably because I never took the time to find out. The main reason why I joined is because the program is available for so many platforms, so I can run it on all my flavors of Operating Systems. Also I like the idea to contribute to a harmless cause with a consolidated group of people. The principe of distributed computing brought in practice wih common means.
- I do have some suggestions. I always check how fast a unit is processed on a particular CPU type. In the AIX and RS/6000 conner the SETI program is in my humble opinion not very much optimized, this could be done beter. There is a lot of POWER on a RS/6000 and I don't think the SETI program exploits this. The Linux version is far better optimized when I look at the stats. With AIX 5L I can run linux programs on RS/6000 maybe this will change the stats and represent the true capabilities of the AIX systems beter.
