| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Why do I participate in SETI@HOME?:
I am unsure about the question of ET intelligence and contact with us earthlings. I hope that
we make contact with a mutually beneficial civilization in my lifetime. The most fascinating
and useful aspect of this project is global distributed computing power. Millions of dumb
machines tied together to analyze huge amounts of information for the advancement of human
knowledge, how cool is that! Do I think SETI@home will bring prosperity and a new age of
understanding? Hope so but probably not, but the work done here to show how an individual
can contribute to a larger whole, is most fascinating. Plus there are many other
ridiculous endeavors that humans come together for, why not dedicate otherwise idle
computing time to a goal perhaps most important of all.
Should humans transmit beacons for other civilizations to find us?:
Technically, we already do. Vast energy radiates outward from our globe every second of every day. I
hope that the first decoded signals will express humanities best qualities rather than
dubious remnants of our mistakes.
