Personal background |
I live in Pacific Palisades, CA, with my wife, 2 kids and our dog. I have a BS in mathematics from MIT and PhD in Astrophysics from UC Berkeley. I have worked in the field of remote sensing for over 15 years. I am currently working in the field of Quantum Information Science and Technology (QIST). I am interested in how to use quantum states of physical systems as "bits" or qubits for computing and cryptography. I am also interested other aspects of classical high performance computing, distributed and grid computing for scientific applications
My hobbies including reading, hiking, bicycling, scuba diving, traveling and spending time with my family (not in order of priority or frequency of occurrence). |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
When my son was 11 years old he asked me if I believed in "Aliens". I said that I did believe that there is other life somewhere in the Universe and that it is important to look for it. I believe that the discovery of evidence of life outside the confines of the Earth will have significant impact on humans, both philosophically and scientifically.
I believe that it is important to search for other forms of life and that such searches can take many forms. SETI@home is one method, the transmission of a beacon is another - both focused on signals. We should also search for evidence on Mars and other objects within our solar system.
I think SETI@home is a great project and currently run it on several computers at home and work. The computational model that it employs is a great idea and closely related to my own area of research - Grids. |
