Personal background
Hi! I am a 25 year old IT proffesional. I live in the Netherlands and I have quite a few hobby's. Computing offcourse is one of them. I also like to watch star trek, drive and work on my car (a 1992 Honda Prelude) and I am also interested in HAM radio. In SETI three hobby's are combined, HAM, computing and science fiction. I have been an (almost) day one user and I plan to donate as mch computing power as I can for as long as the project lasts!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Personally, being a Star Trek fan I do beleive extraterestrial life does exist although I serioulsy have my doubts that we will find any evidence in the next few decades. Even if we would find evidence the chances are that we would not know how to communicaite with them or even know how to get there! It is concieveable that there is a civilisation out there that does know how to bridge the vast areas of space that lie between the stars but it would also make a lot of sense if they had another form of communication, thibk of the subspace radio they invented in star trek. We are not searching for those signals and we even don't know how.

Sending info is an option, but I think there are more cons then pros in doing that. For one there is the chance that we attract unwanted attention, but on the other hand, if there is a hostile force out there, they would probably find us anyway because of our other not intetional transmissions. On the other hand, say we send out a signal wich is detected (by coincidence) by a less developed civilisation and we cause a planet wide chaos? All these hypothesis are based on the idea that life on other planets is somewhat like us, the chance of that is pretty small though so the question "what should we send" becomes a pretty difficult one. I would think that we should look at what knowledge you would need to have to receive our signal and send a message in that "language"

The seti@home project in my opinion is a fantastic program but what bothers me the most is that development is slow. I know the project team is verry small but I think that the seti@home project team could learn a bit from the open source community and the working methods of open source projects. I know that there is a lot of fear that the results could get disturbed but I fimrly beleive that other people could benefit from what seti has learned and more importent the seti team could learn a lot from other people wich could benefit the project substanlialy.
