Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Without doubt, life exists beyond this planet. Life on THIS planet began with water. The probability of life only having the right conditions to appear and evolve on one planet in the entire universe is statistically mind-boggling. We only know of this life - there may be countless other forms out there beyond our comprehension. The question is more whether intelligent life exists out there and if so, how far away is it and are they interested in hearing from an upright ape?
We are transmitting enough noise and beacons out into space to allow our near neighbours to realise we are here. I believe our technology is not advanced enough yet to be able to legibly send a greeting across our own galaxy and hear a response in an appropriate timeframe. Radio may not be the right technology. We may be tens of thousands of years behind in our development and using an out-dated or undiscovered form of communication is folly. On the other hand, we may be tens of thousands ahead in our thinking and a remote lifeform simply cannot hear let alone understand us.
I run SETI@home because I think it is the only hope of pushing the boundary of our existing technology to get ahead. To grid our collective computing power together is the next logical step for us as a species.
