Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ET exist? Definately - the universe is getting bigger every time we develope the means to see/listen farther. Thinking we are the only ones has less credit than if I claimed I were God.

How/when will humans discover ET? We won't for a long while - perhaps a century or 20...if we survive. At our current rate, I would imagine we never will. Although we have made marvelous technology breakthroughs in the last century, we have many many more yet to stumble accross before we actually have a glimmer of a chance to discover / communicate with ET.

The benefits and dangers of discovering ET? Obviously there would be fanatical uprising in the religious communities, probably outright war. Eventually, the benefits would be the sharing of knowledge and developing trade. Of course, the danger that ET might want our planet more than us will always be a possibility.

Should we transmit a beacon for others to find? Sure, though we are currently limited to transmitting data at light-speed. Kind of defeats the purpose to get a reply hundreds of years after the fact...who will remember or care to listen when the senders aren't here? Who will remember how to operate a radio telescope?

What kind of information should we send? That's simple - a repeating mathematical sequence consisting of prime numbers. Lets not assume ET has ears or eyes - keep it simple.

Why run SETI? I've already said I don't believe we will discover ET in my lifetime, or that of my children - but if I don't help, how can I pretend to take astronomy seriously? I also realize that the various data obtained from this project is not entirely geared towards talking to green men, but is used for astronomical research as well.

I do wish SETI@Home were more recognized - far too many people don't know what SETI stands for, and are usually astonished when they learn about seti@home. I'd like to see advertisements or promotionals - such as on the discovery channel during a astronomy show. Regardless, I'm glad to participate in this feat
