Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Finding ETI would be good for us earthlings. It would make us more realistic about the universe and our role therein.

Should we send powerful signals to advertise ourselves? Yes, but only if we aim the signals at the nearest star systems. Dialogue with our neighbors could be incredibly enriching. Hopefully they would not try to conquer us (or us them). It's worth the risk.

Signaling to more distant places, i.e., too far away for meaningful dialogue, would either have no effect or invite conquest by some very advanced civilization that may have faster-than-light ships. Remember, survival of the fittest. Galactic survivors must be incredibly tough. Read "Metal Teeth", sci fi story by Lou Fisher.
