Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that we are not alone in the universe. There are many ways upon which we may discover life beyond our blue planet. If we are talking about lessor lifeforms, then I would think that we will discover it robotically. Humans are good at building things, therefore, it would seem natural that something humans have built, would pave the way for a discovery. If we are talking about life equal to or more intelligent than humans, then I would gather that we may be the ones who are discovered. Our discovery of extraterrestrial life could end up being more like an awakening. We are youngsters in a universe that is far older than we are. I think that life will come to us, not the other way around. Discovery in of itself is always a good thing. It is what we choose to do with the information that is the danger. How much more dangerous can it really be? We have already come close to nuclear war, thus, exterminating ourselves.

We should transmit a beacon for others to find. We should stay away from theological issues though, because they may pose a serious dilemma for other life to interpret. We should stick to hard science, universal laws of physics and understanding. We may consider using a global form of hieroglyphics. Picture symbols and picture stories are often the easiest form of language for any intelligiable being to understand.

I run SETI@HOME because it is a chance to be a part of something bigger than all of us. The project is a worth while one. The only suggestion that I have is perhaps, programming the new version to include the ability to run some of the sounds as they are being analyzed. This would help get users more involved in the experience and may also boost project attendence.
