Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think this is a great idea! I am surprised that it took so long for someone else to take up the idea of distributed computing using spare processing power available everywhere. I will stick with Seti@Home for now, but can see the advantages of processing data for the eventual cure for cancer (one of Seti@Home\\'s \\"competitors\\"). My goal for now is to get to the breakeven point so that my processing time meets or exceeds the ammount of time that I have been a member of seti@home, and then to dedicate half of my machines to processing for \\"the competition\\". I think this is only fair, and both are for a good reason.

I\\'d like to think that I\\'m one of the original crunchers for Seti, having been a SetiAtHome member for almost 3 years. I could be higher up on the list with more processor time, but being in the army when I first joined, I didn\\'t have a lot of time for getting online to send the data. Now that I\\'m out of the army, I can let the computer call up automatically whenever it can to maximize the time it spends processing the data on my home computers...

I think that there will definately be a discovery from this someday, although whether or not the general public will know about it is another story. Having worked for the government, I know that if such a discovery were made, the information would be classified immediatly.

Should we transmit our own signal? We already are. Everything in the VHF Hi band and higher in frequency passes through the atmosphere into space, and can possibly be received by extraterrestrial intelligence... who knows, maybe they are watching old black and white TV shows of ours already! However, realistically speaking, none of the signals that we generate terrestrially are intentially beamed towards any point in space (except those intended for satellites). This does put a limitation on E.T. receiving the signals. However, with a big enough \\"C Band\\" dish, who knows!
