Personal background

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think extraterrestrial life exists. I don't think humans will find conclusive evidence of it in my lifetime. The scale of time and distance is just too great compared to tiny windows of civilization. In a room the size of a football stadium, what are the chances that two specific particles of dust will collide? Seems like two civilizations communicating across time and space is at least as hard as that.

I run SETI@home because it seems more useful than spinning away idle cycles, and it advances the idea and knowledge of distributed computing. I'd be much more interested in something more directly useful, like if there was a massively CPU-intensive search that could be done in medical research.
