Profile: HAL9000@UIUC

Personal background
I am a 6th-semester student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign enrolled in Computer Engineering and French Commercial Studies. I am a collectioner of CD's, videogames, DVD's, and artsy-fartsy objects and literature. Hobbies include people-watching (an excellent sport), going to museums and exhibits, concerts (classical, rock and electronic), and rotting my brain on Half-life and strategy games. I also have a tendency to debate about inane (insane?) subjects like the prononciation of classical Latin, the moral disposition of Spaulding Gray, and the dubiousness of Nihilism.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The quest of SETI@home to have the general populace aid in the search of otherworldly intelligence through the use of idle processor time is probably the most noble use of the internet I have ever seen. While I think finding extraterrestrial life within the next 100 years is improbable, it is not impossible, and we should devote whatever time we have to tilting our ears and eyes toward heaven to see what the universe may bring. If anything, we will learn more about ourselves even if the search is fruitless.

As far as beacons are concerned, we put out a lot of signals from everything from NPR to BET, so why would we even need one?
