Profile: Andrew James

Personal background
I'm in my thirties, married and finishing off a PhD in analytical chemistry. In order to keep the wolf from the door, I'm employed as a chemical engineer in the pharmaceutical industry. I live on the South coast of England near the Isle of Wight. It is sometimes sunny in this part of the country, which is why I chose to live here.

To help keep me sane I spend my weekends keeping an ageing VW Scirocco on the road. It's keeping me very busy at the moment. I'm a 6th Kyu at Shotokan karate and will be working my way up to my 1st Dan sometime in the future. I build 1/35 scale armour kits, my current project is a model of the one VK4501(P) to see combat as a main battle tank. I'm also a Goth so I wear a lot of black and listen to bleak disturbing music. Those of a similar lifestyle can catch up with me at Dark Trix, Resurgence or WGW.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ET exist? Of course he does. Is he a small grey chap with large black eyes? Who knows. I would just love it if ET landed on the Whitehouse lawn and demanded to see Doctor Who put back on the TV schedules as they were just getting into the story... If ET has faster than light capability perhaps we could ask them to tape them for us, seeing as the BBC has erased the masters.

On a more sensible tone, I think we should wait and see what sort of signal (if any) we receive and make a decison then on what to do next. Although we have been remarkably careless about our transmissions over the past 60 or so years. So on that point I guess we have already been transmitting a beacon to ET for sometime now.

I run SETI@Home as I just loved the idea of processing data for something terribly important. Finding out that we are not alone in the Universe, that must be the ultimate research project. Smashing up atoms in colliders is all well and good, but what does it really tell us about ourselves? Getting some sort of message from "out there" even if it is ET's version of Coronation Street (Grim UK Soap Opera for those not familiar with it)will I reckon shake up a lot people and hopefully for the good.
