Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Of course extraterrestrial life exists, that much I am certain. Intelligent life? Much harder to be quite so certain but still very much a possibility and, given the odds, I suppose a decent probability. I have many thoughts on the subject of whether contact could endanger us, but it's hard to be objective when all around us we are fed scenarios in the name of entertainment. We humans really do have such a lot to learn, right now I question whether or not we're ready. It's not our fault though, our 'worst' traits are only there because of evolution, we needed to be greedy and selfish to survive so we can't expect to lose those practically overnight in evolutionary terms.
If, as part of this project, we do receive proof of extraterrestrial life I don't think that in itself would be dangerous, it would be so old, having been sent so long ago, that all it would be is a sign that life is out there somewhere, and that would be mind-blowing enough for us. It's not as if we could go out and pay a visit in my lifetime. Heigh ho.
