Profile: Dr. JcL

Personal background
I am a 54 year old physicist involved in relativistic research; most notably, the physics of Time. For 40 years however, I have been an avid amateur astronomer, enjoying planetary astronomy most of all. And in this regard, Mars and Jupiter are my favorites.

As to the search for extraterrestrial life? It's been my passion. I have also been involved in generating large-scale macromolecules in primordial reducing atmospheres through natural forces as well, as such a primordial environment represents the most probable scenario for life to arise. The results of this research have not been published to date, however.

Best Regards,

Joe Lisiewski
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Even discounting the Drake equation, if we look at the immensity of the universe and what we are continually discovering about it, the idea of life existing elsewhere is, in my opinion, an inevitability. If life is a reaction to environmental conditions...as such early works as Miller's established...then considering the infinite number of variables "out there," it is only a matter of time before we make contact with other life forms. Unfortunately, due to the state of our present social development, such a discovery would probably cause more "harm" than good. Everything from politics to philosophy; from concepts of "individuality" as it is conceived of today, to religion; all would be powerfully effected. And as our history has shown, while humans are resiliant, we do not take to radical change very well. Nevetheless, we have to continue to search for extraterrestrial life, regardless of the "consequences." To be sure, there are dangers; but the only real dangers come from fear that stems from ignorance. This if our only real danger...and enemy.

If we are monitoring the skies for signals, I see it as only "fair" that we reciprocate and transmit signals as well. Who knows? Maybe someone out there, closer than we think, is scanning their skies right now, looking for the same thing we are: signals from other life forms. So yes, our participation in signal generation is, in my opinion, an absolute necessity. As to its content? Perhaps mathematical codes of simple geometric and trigonometric data would be a good place to start.

I run SETI@home to help out in some small way. If enough of us do this, well, maybe we will come up with something a lot sooner than the nay-sayers would like...and (happily) can tolerate.
