Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I neither believe, nor disbelieve in extraterrestrials. But I _hope_ we are not alone. Anyone that could receive a message from us quickly enough, that is inclined and enabled, to annihilate us, would have already spotted our steps into the cosmos and done so. Anyone who can't hear us, wouldn't hear us anyway. So send a message. Two things make SETI work essential : (i) If we don't get off this rock we call Earth, we're guaranteed to become an extinct species one way or the other, and (ii) in a world full of questions about religion, science, and philosophy, knowing whether or not we are alone might help save humanity from self- annihilation.
