Profile: Nick Deakin

Personal background
Hi,
My name is Nick deakin. I am 42 years of age married with 3 children. I reside in Walsall in the West Midlands Region of England in the U.K. I have only just registered with the seti@home initiative...glad to be doing my bit. A life long science, science fiction and spaceflight fanatic.
My interest really began watching the first lunar landings live on T.V and it hasn't let up since. I collect astronaut autographs and endeavour to get them personally when possible. That was only a dream to when I first began collecting them.
My occupation is as a gas engineering surveyor and investigator into carbon monoxide poisonings and fatalities on behalf of the HSE and Police. Far removed from life in space I know.
Thanks.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe extraterrestrial life exists and probably in many different forms. I do not believe we have been visited yet. With the vast distances involved we perhaps never will be but obviously advances in everything scientific are around every corner so I'll keep an open mind.Benefits could include everything from shared knowledge with an advanced culture to a nutritious food alternative for a future space roving mankind.

I do believe in transmitting to other potential civilisations and would hope that if at the same level as us, if hostile as we are, they would not have the ability to reach us and if more advanced than us would no longer be of an hostile nature.

I run seti@home as it makes good use of computer power although I was surprised to find that it took 78 hours to complete 1 unit. I think I need a new computer. Its a great idea for other projects too. Wouldn't it be great to use all of the excess computer power in the world to reserach and develop new medicines and cure some of the current down to Earth problems too!
