Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Without basis of any scientific evidence, I have believed in other life in
the universe since the early age of about 10 (1948). I would hope the
discovery comes in my lifetime. I was terribly remis in not signing up
for SETI@home when it was first available. The more knowledge that I have
gained since the early years, I am now more convinced than ever of
extraterrestrial life. My best book of late on the subject is "Are We
Alone in the Cosmos? (The guide to the search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence) by Ben Bova and Byron Preiss Editors. My first book was
"We Are Not Alone" by Walter Sullivan (1964) and then "The Search for
Extraterrestrial Intelligence" SETI by NASA (1977). The invention of the
multichannel receivers has been of great interest to me since my hobby is
amateur radio.
2. Beacons? I have not really formed an opinion on this subject because of
the distances of possible extraterrestrial life and the power involved
in obtaining a high wattage transmission. I think that money could be
better invested in better receiving power at the moment.
3. I was terribly remis in not signing up for SETI@home when it first was
available. I leave my computer on all the time with a screen saver so it
is a perfect application of unused computer time.
