Profile: John Bruce

Personal background
I live in Bournemouth which is a seaside resort on the south coast of the UK. I have three children 4, 5 and 9 years old.

I work in IT in Poole (the townnext door to Bournemouth) and use my poor work PC to do the crunching for Seti (not supposed to put external programs on, but I designed the build so there!).

Far too much light polution here to study the stars, and an added problem of the rain and clouds!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that it is inevitable that extraterrestial life exists, intelegent life? Well thats another question.

If it has taken us this long to develop since the birth of our sun, and our sun isn't a young sun (middle aged I suppose) then it is just as likely that other suns will be in similar state of advancement.

Not only that but lets face it "space, its really big you know". Rf transmissions are a bit limiting when they have that far to go. Anyone who can travel in this space will have to find another method to communicate, of which type, we do not know.

I would love to be proved wrong and at some time I think a flood of RF will sweep over us, as our trnasmissions will finally be recieved somewhere else. Our first transmissions are still only one hundred light years out from earth. When they reach another civilisation will they understand what we are saying? Would they want to?
