Profile: IROC

Personal background
I am a former Air Force brat born in Madison, Wisconsin and lived in Long Island NY, Las Vegas NV, Helmdon England, Clovis NM, College Station TX, Austin TX, and Richmond TX. I currently work for Schlumberger as a mechanical engineer. It is a cool job, with lots of perks and challenges. I have extensive experience in research and manufacturing with emphasis on automated material handling (AMHS).

My interests include anything automotive, racing, engine building, and the all important improvement in the cars in my stable. I enjoy spending time with my large group of friends and since we are in Texas, we go country western dancing.

I have been a member of SETI@Home since 1999.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that extraterrestrial life does exist. In what form and level of advancement, I can only speculate. I am not sure someone would want to be a part of S@H and not believe. It is highly doubtful that we are alone in the vastness of the universe. That would be beyond imagination. It is my hope that we will discover life on terms conducive to our development and not detrimental to the other life form at the same time. However, I do agree that humanity is not ready for such a discovery. We are too vain and greedy to accept such a discovery. In addition, I hope we will not fall prey to the possibility some Sci-Fi writers have mentioned, i.e. slaves to other races or exterminated by a species that feels threatened by our existence. This is all just food for thought. I am a great fan of Stephen Baxter and his writings. This creation of Ring touches on a potential for humanity from the start to finish of the universe. Baxter does indicate that our greed and lust for destruction leads to our downfall. It is fiction and I hope we can all rise above the prediction. My $0.02.
