Profile: Ryan Villarica

Personal background
I'm Ryan Villarica, 22, from a little town in the Philippines called Meycauayan.

I just graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University last March 2001, and as of today (10/9/2001) I STILL don't have employment. So what else could I do beside twiddle my thumbs all day at home? Do something worthwhile. Hence I joined SETI@Home.

I am an avid computer and Internet user, and probably the local PCguru in these parts.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I've heard about SETI from, believe it or not, the game Civilization II. Something about going where no one else has gone before, and the fact that there are no kooks with aluminum foil helmets in this group. Maybe.

I don't believe that we are the only ones in the universe - just like what the Europeans believed back in the Rennaissance. There's simply too much space out there for life to be confined to a solitary blue dot in an insignificant solar system in a backwater part of space. There could be gazillions of intelligent civilizations out there, or it could be just two. The only wya we'll really know is to try.

And that's why I'm a loud and proud member of the SETI@Home community.
