Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) I think some form of extraterrestrial life must exist elsewhere. Life will most likely be discovered as either active or past (most likely bacterial) on Mars. Europa is another likely location. Without some kind of radical new method of propulsion, it is unlikely we will ever directly discover anything outside of our solar system (now if it knocks on our door...). The biggest impact of such a discovery will be in the religious sector of our society. Beyond that the possibilities are almost endless (both positive and negative). I would like to see this in my lifetime.

2) Transmission at this time will most likely be a waste of time at best. In order for it to be of any use, there has to be a civilization out there that is (or will be) advanced enough to hear our feable attempt. They will need to be listening in the band we are using, they will need to use simular technology. Even with all of that we will have to be directing it in the proper place. Its a big sky with a lot of stars. Without a specific point to aim at it will be like shooting at a flock of birds. If you don't pick one out, you aren't likely to hit any of them. On top of that, the responce time to our message will be in terms of years. On the plus side, we have been transmitting for 90 years or so.

3) Its easy and its a good use of my PC's idle time. Besides, life wouldn't be interesting without some hope. Some science fiction has become science fact in the past. While my views above may sound pessimistic, listening may be the only way for us to find intelegent life. Listening is also inexpensive. Now, if we do find intelegent life... it will hopefully drive people to find a way to get there.
