Profile: W.C. Comer

Personal background
I was born and raised in Washington, DC, USA but I now live in Germany. I became a German citizen in 1985 after living here off and on since 1965. I am medically retired due to a born ailment but I work from my home to supplement my retirement income as a freelance computer consultant making trips to do on sight work when required. I try to visit my family in the United States each year when possible and we stay in contact mostly through email, ICQ and internet telephone calls. Computers are my first love, kids not included, and anything to do with outer space is second. That makes SETI@home very high on my list!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe almost with a certainty that extraterrestrial life exists based upon the vastness of the universe and the uncountable amount of planets. We as humans have not been in existence very long as compared to the age of the universe and in our short time we've come a long way. Now there are more than likely, from my stand point, species out there that are way older and wiser than we are and one day we'll meet. I find it almost comical that the arrogance of man make some beleive that since we don't have the ability to cross the vast boundaries of space at the present time that it's no way that perhaps another species can. If some species has been watching the evolution or developement of mankind do you think it would be wise for them to contact us, even when we haven't even learned how to stop killing our own kind. Would be a bad mistake.

I beleive that transmitting a signal for other life forms to find is a good idea and we should transmit something that is universal, as far as we know, like numerical sequences. It couid be dangerous to let a species more violent than us to let them no that we're here but all exploration holds it's danger and the chances of making an extraterrestrial friend out weights the danger as far as I'm concerned. I hope that I can add to the discovery by running SETI@home on my computers. I really like the project but would like it even more if I could understand exactly what information I'm crunching at a given time. I would like to understand the complete meaning of the graphs and what section of space it's dealing with. The numbers don't tell me much.

I thank you for your time and keep up the good work. Hope it pays off real soon. Contact!
