Profile: Erik Jurrien Menzel

Personal background
My name is Erik Jurriën Menzel, I am born in 1969 and am currently living in the city of Leiden in The Netherlands (For those who like historical info, that is the city where Rembrandt was born). I studied mathematics and am working for a dutch cable company. As many dutch I have a decent knowledge of languages and speak Dutch (mother tongue), Frysian, German, English, French and Finnish. My language skills are dwarved however by those of my wife's. She has knowledge of Dutch (mother tongue), Frysian (mother tongue),German, English, French, Spanish, Ancient Greek, Latin and Hebrew. My free time is filled with studying French language and literature at the university of Leiden, my wife and daugther and training aikido, although the last two are also combined, as my wife also trains aikido. For those who dont know Aikido, it is a Japanese martial art based on the philosophy of non-resistance and non-violence. I know martial art and non-violence sounds as a paradox, but believe me it is not.

Work, study, aikido and family do take up almost all my spare time, but if I have any spare time left I like to go to the movies, read, play computer games or do some spare time research into elliptic curve cryptology.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
So is searching for E.T. a good thing? Well, I think it is.
Thing I like to know is: If we were created in the image of God does this mean that ET was also created in the image of God and was it the same image?

Transmitting information about ourselves is also a nice way to work on the SETI project. I myself do not believe in the often heard danger of attracting hostile aliens. First of all I believe that we are already sending out a multitude of signals for everybody to hear, so we might as well add a namecard.
Second, what is so interesting about earth and all its tiny ants that hostile aliens are willing to spend a lot of resources to get here.
Third, maybe we havent heard anything sofar because the aliens are as paranoid about being conquered by hostile earthlings, so it would be up to us to extend the hand of friendship across the distances in space.

So what should be in this transmission of ours.
Well obviously a lot of information about me, for I am probably a universal constant, that is, information about an Erik Jurriën Menzel must be so fundamental that as soon as aliens see this information that they immediately recognize the "Erik-ness" of the message and go look for their own Erik within their society. Hence not only communication is accomplished but also a direct kin-ship between Eriks has been realized.
