Personal background
I am a 44-year old male living in rural Snow Hill, North Carolina, with my wonderful wife of nearly 10 years, our 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 50 cockatiels. I am currently a service supervisor for the largest independant office machine company in the country, where I have been for the last 19 years of my life. I am an avid bowler and vice-president and webmaster of our local bowling association. Almost a year ago I teamed up with an online friend I met to form TWORL - Thigpen Wilcox Online Racing League. I spend a lot of time in front of my computer, and when I discovered SETI@Home I thought it would be a blast helping in the search for extraterrestrial life.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have beleived in the existance of extraterrestrial life for as long as I can remember. My earliest specific memory was a science paper I wrote in the 8th grade. In it, I stated that if the universe is infinite in size, then saying there is no other intelligent life out there is like saying there is only one speck of dust in this (class) room. Possible benefits and dangers of the discovery of extraterrestrial life are nearly as difficult to predict as the existance itself. I suppose that the largest danger is the fear factor - most people are afraid of the unknown, and a discovery of this magnitude may very well cause global panic. For that reason, I would suggest that we not transmit a beacon for others to find. Let us be the ones to make the discovery (although many believe we have already been discovered and visited, many times). I run SETI@home because I like the thought of being involved in such an important project. It takes up little of my personal time, although it does take up a lot of my computer time (although since it runs in the background, I hardly notice). I love the idea behind the project, and am excited that so many people are actively involved.
