Personal background
Hi there!

I may work in the software industry, but I'm an astronomer at heart.

Just like many people today, I ended up in the software industry. I'm actually a geologist and astronomer (well that's waht the degree says anyway...), but job availability and prospects pulled harder than acedemia. Luckily I live in the English countryside, and have a phenomemal view of the sky with very little light pollution - which, let's face it is pretty rare these days. The universe is as beautiful as it is varied, and I always look forward to using the telescope in my back garden. Seems to me like a natural extension to help out looking for life elsewhere.

This is made even easier because my other obsession is making my PC run faster and better than any other. If it's on the market, faster, better, or just cooler, then I can pretty much guarantee I run it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Let's face it, the chances of there being life elsewhere than earth is overwhelming.

Astronomy methods are racing forwards, extrasolar planets are being discovered every day. I beliver that within the next 10 years or so, we'll be able to detect goldilocks zones and planets, even being able to detect oxygen in atmospheres.

Basically, I fail to see why we should be the only life, and given how apparently widespread is (complex amino acid molecules in comets and elsewhere), I think that panspermia is the key to why life developed on Earth. For me, this directly implies that life should be as common as an environment capable of supporting it - WE CANNOT BE ALONE.

SETI@home is a brilliant way of utilising as much computing power as possible to process potential signals from extra-solar civilisations. I have been in, out, and in again. This time I intend to keep it up. Corney, but if my efforts help locate life earlier, or at all, then fantastic.

Sorry about the pic, but some people just aren't photogenic.
