Personal background
I am a High School Earth/Space Science Teacher, who has taught for 12 years.
I am also a member of the Alachua Astronomy Club, and am a JPL/NASA Ambassador.
Nothing would solve our petty local, international and religious arguments
than the discovery of other intelligent 'signallers'. This would be the most fundamental of all possible paradigm shifts. Perhaps saving us, or killing us,
either way, meeting our evolutionary potential.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
We have an obligation to search. Not only are we 'hard-wired' for curiosity, we have the means, therefore we should look. What if the criteria for selection into a galactic-arm 'federation' involved our inquisitiveness: were we looking for them if we had the means, or were we just 'spitting in our own cornflakes', too busy with the mosses and humus of our petty squabbles? As John Dobson said; "well of course they want to look!" We should as people of science, set the curve for our short-sighted fellow humans.
Whether we 'choose to send a beacon' or not is absolutely useless: it has been done for almost 100 years.
First of all, it requires only a small amount of computer savvy. I think that this is a worthwhile endeavor, and my only suggestion is to increase the amount of contact w/us...perhaps a biweekly newsletter, giving us a more complete insight as to the larger picture...so we can feel more a part of the project.
