Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that extraterrestrial life exists without any doubt, but I'm not so sure we will discover it using seti. The reason for my scepsis is that an extraterrestrial society wich has develloped significantly less of further than our own will probably not yet or not anymore send the kind of sigals we're looking for. But if we do find ET the benefit for us wil be itirely up to them, meaning this will strongly depend on the nature of them (for the trekkies, wil they be Vulcan or Klingon?).
I think the beacon will help, if ET is anything like us he will sureley be as curious as we are. Looking for each other will double the chance to success in coparison to we just chasing ET down.
My main reason for running seti is not the curiosity but the fun of setting up a team and trying to organise as much CPU time as possible. The latest contribution to my team (vussiewussie rekent) is made by my own P60, not a real crunching maniak, but it does the job.
