Personal background
My wife and I are trying to set a record for the SLOWEST circumnavigation by yacht! Seven years so far to go from Florida to Brisbane Australia. We are currently on "vacation" for three years to save money to continue and also to let the political situation in SE Asia sort itself out.
Currently we run fourcomputer systems for SETI, a 1.4Ghz P4, a 500Mhz P3, a 550Mh Athlon and an Athlon 2000 XP (was a dual processor but it broke :-( ). We started doing SETI units while docked in Australia and have continued while back home in Phoeniz AZ. We haven't figured out a practical way to contribute while we are at sea, but we are working on it!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
To me the only truly amazing thing would be if extraterrestrial life DID NOT exist! However I share Einstein's opinion that the universe is a far stranger place than we can ever imagine, and this alone is the best reason for doing the search. Whatever we find (even if we find nothing) we will learn an incredible amount about the universe and ourselves. If we actually can communicate with a civilization near our own level (very low odds on that!), then it will be the most profound event in human history.
