Personal background
I'm Norwegian, born back in the middle of the last millenium, always been interested in space and space adventures. The days are passed with developing web applications. Of hobbies I've many, but also I'm suffering from lack of time to follow them up. To mention: Astronomy, the big questions, computers, electronics, avionics, guns, alternative health care, model railways and so on.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes. The problem is the discovery. If we should get in contact with other civilizations, the signals therefrom would have been under way for at least 50. 000 years. (The closest estimates for star/planet constellations in the "survivable" range.) This means that there is a difference of 49.926 years in the development of radio transmitting equipment. What if the psycological development is as advanced also? Will we be able to grasp what they are trying to express. Think: What will we be in 50.000 years????
2. Yes of course, but consider the above point.
The transmission could convey anything, and the periodical system must be in there.
3. I run seti@home because it increases the chances of ever finding something in the slices of radio signals from space.
SETI is a noteworthy project as it shows that joint efforts can bring about resources not obtainable in traditional ways. Where else can you process 40.77 TeraFLOPs/sec??
4. There must be a way to find other means of communication, but let's hope that som "primitive" civilization transmitted the priodical system and some binary characters (EBCDIC??) from their spark transmitter about 50.000 years ago and that the signals are approaching Earth. It will be the day when they are discoverd in a chunk of SETI recordings!!
